It is a school with technology and facilities, with teaching practices and values of an informed citizenry, and a community of ongoing learners, participatory individuals, and the globally oriented.

Somerville Ecovillage: The Story So Far

Across the globe, the sustainability agenda has profoundly influenced some emerging visions for physical planning within cities, which aim to move away from sprawl, car dependence and resource-intensive lifestyles. To create human living environments that are more locally-oriented and compatible with the earth’s carrying capacity, many communities across the globe are attempting to turn the concept of an ‘ecovillage’ into a thriving reality.

South Beach and Leighton redevelopments

Community consultation and how effective it is, is a measure of social sustainability. Social sustainability criteria along with economic and environmental measures all have equal value when evaluating projects from a sustainability perspective.

Tammin revitalisation

This is a story about a small Wheatbelt town in Western Australia that refused to die and about a people who turned around their destiny. This feisty small community was faced with disappearing services and farm amalgamations. With a strong connection to their community and the pioneering spirit, they formed the Farmdale Company, the Tammin Action Group and the Tammin Landcare project to save their town and community. The purpose of this case study is to identify the underlying contributing factors for Tammin’s success in addressing economic, ecological, social and cultural sustainability.

Torbay Catchment

Watershed Torbay is a landmark project in its fourth and final year, focusing on a new approach to land care, where hard science is integrated with a high degree of community involvement to achieve sustainable outcomes on a whole catchment scale.

The Meeting Place (Fremantle)

Many local authority initiatives are aimed at engaging communities to envision and plan for the future of their locale. These initiatives produce a more active and organised citizenry, who are increasingly engaged in political processes, build social capital and work towards improving local economic, social and environmental conditions. An example of such an initiative is the Meeting Place in Fremantle, which is provides a forum within the community for such engagement and participation
