Lakewood
Shores An Ecologically Sustainable Approach to Land Development.
New land developments are constantly being released on the
market. The majority of such developments are designed to satisfy consumer
demand and the reality of the market. However, some developers are genuinely
looking at a different approach, one that engages with sustainability
issues and reflects new consumer expectations.....
Noongar
Approaches
We traverse Noongar country every day…
Diverse understandings exist in relation to what constitutes ‘sustainability’.
This is a direct reflection of the tensions that are a reality of our
daily lives. These tensions invariably penetrate, influence and merge
social, cultural, economic and environmental lines. Significantly, sustainability
involves another dimension: that of culture, which influences the ways
in which we perceive and make sense of the world around us.....
Rostrata
Primary School: The story of Rostrata Primary School: A ‘Sustainability
Oriented’ School
Rostrata Primary is a public school. Nevertheless, it has
achieved the social health and successes of the very best private schools,
and perhaps even surpassed them. It is a school with technology and facilities,
with teaching practices and values of an informed citizenry, and a community
of ongoing learners, participatory individuals, and the globally oriented.
Somerville
Ecovillage: The Story So Far
Across the globe, the sustainability agenda has profoundly
influenced some emerging visions for physical planning within cities,
which aim to move away from sprawl, car dependence and resource-intensive
lifestyles. To create human living environments that are more locally-oriented
and compatible with the earth’s carrying capacity, many communities
across the globe are attempting to turn the concept of an ‘ecovillage’
into a thriving reality.
South
Beach and Leighton redevelopments
Community consultation and how effective it is, is a measure
of social sustainability. Social sustainability criteria along with economic
and environmental measures all have equal value when evaluating projects
from a sustainability perspective.
Tammin
revitalisation
This is a story about a small Wheatbelt town in Western
Australia that refused to die and about a people who turned around their
destiny. This feisty small community was faced with disappearing services
and farm amalgamations. With a strong connection to their community and
the pioneering spirit, they formed the Farmdale Company, the Tammin Action
Group and the Tammin Landcare project to save their town and community.
The purpose of this case study is to identify the underlying contributing
factors for Tammin’s success in addressing economic, ecological,
social and cultural sustainability.
Torbay
Catchment
Watershed Torbay is a landmark project in its fourth and
final year, focusing on a new approach to land care, where hard science
is integrated with a high degree of community involvement to achieve sustainable
outcomes on a whole catchment scale.
The
Meeting Place (Fremantle)
Many local authority initiatives are aimed at engaging communities
to envision and plan for the future of their locale. These initiatives
produce a more active and organised citizenry, who are increasingly engaged
in political processes, build social capital and work towards improving
local economic, social and environmental conditions. An example of such
an initiative is the Meeting Place in Fremantle, which is provides a forum
within the community for such engagement and participation
