Hanu Brotherpeter: “2006 Suburban Renewal at the New Coolbellup” (PDF 2.5Mb)

This case study explores the way in which entrenched suburban blight has been reversed in the Coolbellup area, through the partnership of the Department of Housing and Works and Mirvac Fini, and through a commitment to increased community collaboration and participation in the decision-making processes associated with suburban development and change management.

Julia Marley: “Greening and Recreational Initiatives to Improve the Health Outcomes, Lifestyles and Aesthetics of Remote Indigenous Communities” (PDF 1.2Mb)

In recognition of the fact that innovative and creative approaches that  include grass-roots participation and empowerment are required to build sustainable Indigenous communities, this case study details six Western Australian Indigenous communities allocated ‘Greening Projects,’ which were contracted to EarthCare, and explores their successes and challenges over the past five years.

Shane Cowan: “Mimsbrook farm Biodynamic Food Store” (PDF 108kb)

Mimsbrook Farm, a certified biodynamic food production operation located on five hectares near the Perth southern suburb of Armadale, participates in Community Supported Agriculture which links consumers to the source of their organic food. This case study looks at Biodynamic Community Supported Agriculture in general, from a sustainability perspective, with specific reference to the operation at Mimsbrook Farm.

Paul Needham: “Precious Water” (PDF 328kb)

This case study examines waste-water re-use and stormwater harvesting in the Kalgoorlie-Boulder region of Western Australia. Kalgoorlie-Boulder has long been a Western Australian leader in this area, and is currently working towards 100% waste-water reuse. The Kalgoorlie-Boulder expansion of waste-water re-use and their implementation of new stormwater harvesting infrastructure, as outlined in this case study, provides a positive example for other towns considering similar initiatives.

Gavin Giles: “KIDS – A Sustainable Environmental Organisation” (PDF 2Mb)

This case study examines Millennium Kids: an organisation run by young people, for young people, and encouraging others to be active and aware in the environment. Formed in 1999, Millennium Kids provides a forum for youth to network, communicate, identify and implement environmental projects, as well as to foster youth leadership through industry and governmental partnerships.

Nathan Ritchie: “Wood Waste Recycling in the Malaga Industrial Area: A Sustainable and Strategic Waste Initiative” (PDF 116kb)

Malaga’s Wood Waste Recycling Project, funded by the Western Australian Strategic Waste Management Board, and Ernst and Young in 2005, was initiated to examine the extent of wood waste generated in Malaga and to identify opportunities to divert this waste from landfill. This case study explores the sustainability implications and challenges of the Wood Waste Recycling Project to date.

Clarrie Green: “Community Consultation Process in the Leighton Redevelopment, and their Effects on Outcomes” (PDF 260kb)

This case study investigates how redevelopment outcomes are affected by the implementation of differing consultation processes, and highlights the importance of well organised community consultation, with strong reference to the Leighton Redevelopment. The Leighton Redevelopment project proposal is a prime example of how using the right consultation process can influence public acceptance and rejection of projects.

Joanne Stewart: “City of South Perth: Developing a Sustainability Management System” (PDF 396kb)

Organisations are increasingly attempting to incorporate sustainable strategies and practices into their operations, despite there being no specific standard or guide available to facilitate the implementation. This case study details the way that the City of South Perth has overcome this problem, by adapting a mix of tools to make sustainability manageable.

Andrew Hutcheon: “Implementation of Sustainability as a Core Function of South West Regional Victoria Institute of Tafe” (PDF 336kb)

The South West Institute is a multi-campus institute, providing a wide range of vocational, pre-vocational and preparatory programmes to the community of regional South West Victoria. This case study provides a static cross-sectional view of the Institute’s evolving management efforts and initiatives to engage in sustainability in a substantial and meaningful way.

Talia West: “Living Smart Environmental Education Program: Promoting behaviour change for sustainability in Fremantle” (PDF 196kb)

Whilst local government authorities are in an important position to provide the vision and structure for a more sustainable society, sustainability outcomes are greatly impacted by the decisions and behaviours of individual citizens. This case study identifies the ways in which the Living Smart Environmental Education Program, initiated by the City of Fremantle,  changes individual behaviour through education and networking, and by developing social capital and trust.
