New Link: Encyclopedia of Earth

www.eoearth.org

Just launched at the National Press Club in Washington D.C., the EoE is a means for the global scientific community to come together to produce the first free, expert-driven, massively scaleable information resource on the environment, and to engage civil society in a public dialogue on the role of environmental issues in human affairs. It contains no commercial advertising and will reach a large global audience.

At launch, the EoE has 3,000+ articles from more than 700 authors and content partners that span 50 nations. Initial content partners include the American Institute of Physics, the University of California Museum of Paleontology, the National Humanities Center, the International Arctic Science Committee, the World Wildlife Fund, Conservation International, and the United Nations Environment Programme, to name just a few.

How green is my council?
- for metro Perth, Western Australia

All Perth's Councils have websites, but some communicate environmental information much better than others. Check out your Council's website and read our survey of its environmental performance. Then see the comparison chart to see how it stacks up beside other metro Councils.

"Discovery Bay" in Hong Kong: A good example of a working car-free community- http://www.discoverybay.com.hk/index.htm

Discovery Bay is a community of around 25,000 people where no private cars are allowed at all - no exceptions. The only access is by public bus or by ferry.Transportation within the DB community is by bicycle, public bus, or private taxi. Goods vehicles for delivering produce to shops and residences can obtain access permits. The system works exceedingly well, with added benefits of providing a safe environment for children who are able to walk and play freely, plus an almost non-existent crime rate (it seems that without a "get-away" car, there is no incentive to commit burglaries or other crimes. HORIZON Solutions

Site http://www.solutions-site.org

The Solutions Site, created by HORIZON Communications, provides readily accessible peer reviewed answers to problems in environment, health, population and development. Initiatives are gathered through a number of different means, including direct user submissions, the efforts of partner institutions, and HORIZON's own research activities.

The case studies not only encourage the replication of existing projects and provide information on how to do so, but also inspire the development of new initiatives.

The International Development Research Centre (IDRC) of Canada, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Environment Programme (UNEP), Population Fund (UNFPA), UNICEF, and Yale and Harvard universities are collaborating with HORIZON on the Site, and numerous other organizations are cooperating by providing case studies.
